Flat assembling

After we had completed all the flats needed for both rooms we began construction of the rooms. To begin, we positioned two corresponding walls that went beside it in the plan. Next we made sure that they fit correctly and the edges were flush. Using an electric drill, I proceeded to drill screws at 2 feet intervals, securing the flats together. However, for extra support we added horizontal feet to give the boards extra stability whilst connecting the next wall on to it.

The next connecting sections were the fireplace flats; we were shown how to join flats such as these together correctly. It was important that the fireplace flat covered the exposed edge of the 1 foot wide flat. This ensures there are no edges facing the front view perspective of this section. As the walls began to assemble, a large amount of us where required to keep the flats straight whilst someone added the screws.

I clamped the window footer in place connecting it with the next flat and used an electric drill to insert the screws at 1 foot intervals working from the bottom upwards, then moved the whole set anti clock wise around the other side of the room. This was to allow enough space to fit both of the room lengths way in the room.

We had to make brackets to keep the set stable when assembled. To do this we needed two pieces of softwood of the same length. The flats needed to be screwed together so that the two pieces would form a right angle, while others screwed them together in 2 feet intervals.

For the 5ft double door header I repeated the process of construction we have been using. After cutting 2 5 feet pieces and 2 1 and a half foot pieces I screwed the frame together. Firstly I pre drilled the holes on the vertical pieces and then assembled the frame from one corner to the next one.

Using pva and a brush I applied the glue around the frame. I then stuck the skin on and secured it using a nail gun.
