Analysis of Franz Kafka’s ‘Metamorphosis’ (1915)

I took notes of descriptions of Gregor’s transformed state as these insights help the reader build up a representational image and form that they imagine and relate to the one Gregor now inhabits.

Ø  ‘Sticky stuff on his legs’ this extremely descriptive section of narrative really implies how gruesome and distorted Gregor’s new body really is. This influenced our idea of representing his physical metamorphosis through traces of such substances. This would be used to support the narrative but also used as a visual representational idea of the terror of unforeseen change
Ø  The movement of Gregor’s many legs were captured to me in this quote from the novel ‘numerous legs’ and ‘Wriggling legs’.
Ø  The idea of his legs controlling him interested me through their restriction on his capability. The quote ‘a lot of little legs, incessant in their various motions’ suggest his needs to adapt to his transformed new form.
Ø  ‘brown fluid came from his mouth, flowed over the key and dripped onto the floor’. I though this quote very key in supporting the narrative correctly to produce the writer’s desired visually explosive image.
Ø  The writer establishes Gregory’s true form and structure through descriptive in sights ‘armour-hard back’,  ‘rigid bow-like sections’ and ‘his dom-like back’.
Ø  The rash that has appeared on his abdomen described by the quote ‘covered with small white spot’ creates a visually graphic image helps the reader imagine what the appearance of it looks like.
Ø  ‘he lay quietly with weak breathing, as if perhaps waiting for normal and natural conditions to remerge out of complete stillness’. This passage in the book stood out to me in particular as it shows Gregor is only concerned with the present in amongst his revelations about going to work. This shows his uncertainty of his purpose in life due to his gradual metamorphosis.
Ø  ‘he really had to hobble on his two rows of legs.’
Ø  The quote ‘he acquired the habit of crawling back and forth across the walls and ceiling.’ This adds to the idea of his new found instinct and change perspective on his purpose of life. His bedroom towards the end of the novel shows the force of constant isolation affecting his grasp on life and its new meaning.
Ø  ‘The fresh food, by contrast, did not taste good to him.’ Which shows the extent of his change in his physical appearance but also in his natural urge for food

Indications of the appearance and ascetics of the sets in the text which I will take in to a count for my own design layouts.

Ø  ‘Gregor’s glance then turned to the window’ the window in Gregor’s bedroom in particular is a significant section of the room where he would of spent a lot of his time. Gregor is described in the book looking out the window to substance a sense of normality. This association with the outside world Gregor seems to be attached
Ø  The theme of time is relevant in this novel through the emphasize on Gregor’s perspective of it is shown through this ‘He saw the alarm clock over there, ticking on the chest of drawers’.
Ø  ‘he was lying right there on the carpet’ suggests the position of the carpet and its layout in the room.
Ø  ‘the curtains on the window flew around, the newspapers on the table rustled’-this quote gives an idea of the ascetics within Gregor’s bedroom. The newspaper relates to his working life, suggestions of traveling and interest in local news.
Ø  ‘On the white door ugly blotches were left. ’ the writer paints a mental graphical representation of the sets appearance through descriptive imagery for the reader to visually interpret through thought.
Ø  ‘the living room door,’ helpful insight into the amount of doors the room features
Ø  The importance of the couch in the story shows Gregor’s attachment to his personal possessions. The quotes ‘With a half-unconscious turn and not without a little shame he scurried under the couch’ suggests this item is one he continued using after his transformation in several different ways.
Ø  ‘There were old half-rotten vegetables, bones from the evening meal, covered with a white sauce which had almost solidified, some raisins and almonds, cheese
Ø   ‘While during the day Gregor, out of consideration for his parents, did not want to show himself by the window’ this shows he is aware of his families shamefulness they have expressed towards his new form resulting in his physiological depression which causes him to retract himself from his surroundings and except his fate.
Ø  ‘leaving the chest of drawers in the middle of the room would block all Gregor’s pathways, but, in the second place, they could not be at all certain that Gregor would be pleased with the removal of the furniture.’
Ø  ‘Was he really eager to let the warm room, comfortably furnished with pieces he had inherited, be turned into a cavern in which he would, of course, then be able to crawl about in all directions without disturbance, but at the same time with a quick and complete forgetting of his human past as well? Was he then at this point already on the verge of forgetting and was it only the voice of his mother, which he had not heard for a long time, that had aroused him?’
Ø  ‘In his condition he could not function without the beneficial influences of his furniture.’ Gregor expresses his personal attachment to the furniture in his bedroom as well as his need found need for them to help his mobility.
Ø  ‘not only of the chest of drawers and the writing desk’ Indications of two piece of furniture that I could incorporate into my initial ideas of the sets appearance.
Ø  The writer uses the kitchen girls role to represent how people attitudes towards Gregor’s change has gone undetected as to suggest the families ignorance in trying to live their life as nothing as ever happened. Their cruel nature is shown through their mistreatment of Gregor at such a depressing and traumatic period.  ‘The servant girl was naturally shut up in her kitchen’
Ø  ‘the father soon fell asleep in his arm chair’ This shows Gregor’s attachment to this piece of furniture which we will need to incorporate into the living room set.
‘The mother took care of everything else, in addition to her considerable sewing work’ this suggests types of objects we could add to the set to relate to specific characters in the narrative. Therefore this will add a sense of the presence of characters within the space metaphorically.
